A sweet way to give chocolates

From her warehouse with a small kitchen and pretty showroom in North Plano, Laura Belozerco creates lavish gifts featuring handmade chocolate truffles for her business, Victoriana. Individually boxed as party favors for weddings and bar mitzvahs or in a variety of containers that are pretty enough to be keepsakes, presentation is what makes these chocolate gifts special.

Victoriana's chocolates are presented in style in the Empire Ceramic Box (front) and in the wrapped version.

Some, such as the fabric- and ribbon-covered Victorian-style boxes filled with three truffles, are decidedly feminine. Others, such as the mahogany memory boxes containing 30 truffles, make great guy gifts. Ms. Belozerco sells her gifts at Sisters Italian Charm, a shop in Frisco; by mail order; and by special appointment. Her extra-large truffles are made on the premises and come in four flavors: chocolate hazelnut, white chocolate with dulce de leche (milk caramel imported from Argentina), solid caramel with pecans, and fudge. Prices range from $4.50 each for a boxed wedding party favor to $165 for the mahogany box filled with 30 truffles. The Argentinean-born Ms. Belozerco began her business 10 years ago making elaborately hand-decorated gifts from her home. Six years ago, she decided to make her own chocolate.

"Everyone starts in their own kitchen. That's where the experimenting takes place," she says. Last year holiday business was booming. During that time, she had 13 people working for her, making truffles and decorating and preparing the gifts for shipping. Although she doesn't want to keep the regular hours of a retail shop, she is happy to make appointments for clients to come into her house for a tasting.
